Crocheted turtle
is summer 2024 screen time
Project by Anna Ivashechkina
The best way to preserve a summer that has passed unnoticed is to convert it into numbers
and then crochet them. This is how the turtle data art came to be, which compiles data
on how I used my phone during the summer of 2024.

From data to toy
Data collection
First, it was necessary to find an application that would accurately collect data. Then, the data needed
to be transferred to tables for result calculation.

The principles for grouping the applications
were also determined during this process.
Shape and colors
It was important to find a design that was both clear
and understandable in relation to summer. There were several options, but a turtle with a shell shaped like a flower turned
out to be the perfect combination of everything needed.

Since only a small amount of yarn was required for the project, it was decided to use the leftovers available at home
and select the ones suitable for each category from them.
Encoding
One of the most time-consuming processes was encoding the results into a rose on a shell. It was necessary to decide how the data would be displayed: in minutes, hours or percentages. These would be converted into columns or petals.

Ultimately, the optimal solution was found. Rounding was applied, which may lead to slight distortions in the data if read without a legend. However, considering the peculiarities of the genre, this is not critical.
The crocheting process itself didn't take long. However, considerable effort was required to fix the eyes with a diameter of 30 mm,
and I had to restart crocheting the flower petals several times.

Nevertheless, the entire creation process took several hours.
The most time-consuming parts were collecting and processing data, as well as searching for a suitable pattern and encoding the information.

P.S. A significant advantage of creating such toys for myself, rather than for sale, is their environmental friendliness: I used remnants of yarn for knitting, and part of the toy was stuffed with thread clippings from other projects.
